Newsletter 16 6-16-2007

Howdy,

I just wanted to drop you all a quick note to let you know how the bear season treated us this year.  Overall it went well although it started out slow.  We ended up taking 6 bears for 9 hunters.  The first week we had 2 hunters, one rifle and one archery, and the rifle hunter took a nice red bear over bait.  The bowhunter had encounters with a nice black over bait but never had it within bow range during legal light.  The next week we had two more hunters and it was one of the more aggravating weeks of bear hunting I've experienced.  The bears seemed to be extremely nocturnal and although we saw a few neither hunter was able to connect.  The next 2 weeks went much better, with all five hunters killing bears, including a couple whopper boars over 6 foot square.  I've got the website updated with pictures of all 6 bears.  They're all on page 13 of the Photo Gallery.  You may notice that there are no captions under the latest batch of photos.  I apologize, but after coming up with short 2 or 3 word captions for a couple hundred pictures the well has run dry!  I still have a couple good weeks available for next spring's bear hunt, one of which could be a baited hunt and the other would be spot and stalk.

After the phenomenal deer season we had last year I'm really looking forward to this fall.  I've got some good dates available for that as well.  The moose draw results are out and I've heard from a couple lucky tag holders so far.  It seems we're seeing more and more elk every year and as I mentioned in an earlier newsletter this will be the first fall I offer elk hunts.  I won't take many elk hunters but I am hoping to do just a few quality hunts/year.

Everybody seems to want a lion all of a sudden.  I'm booked for the coming winter and have had to turn away a number of other interested lion hunters.  I'm booking for the 2008-09 winter now and if it keeps up like it has been it won't stay open much longer either.  The Montana lion tag draw will be in August and I'll be notifying those of you that have expressed interest in that when details are available.

Hope the summer is treating you all well.  Our kids are out of school so they can devote all of their time to tormenting each other.  Which reminds me, Happy Father's Day to all successful breeder males out there!

Take care,

Clint Gray
