Idaho Bear Hunts
Bear hunting with the use of bait or hounds is not permitted in the northernmost hunting unit in Idaho. This results in a relatively dense population and a good age structure. Older bears mean bigger bears and we also have a large proportion of colored (chocolate, cinnamon, and blond) bears. These factors combine to create a bear hunt with an excellent opportunity for a true trophy. Although there are spring and fall seasons, bear hunting success is better in the spring (April 15 to May 31). Bear hunting will be primarily spot and stalk throughout May in Unit 1. During the first 2 weeks of May we sometimes offer baited hunts in the southern portion of our area where the use of bait is permitted.
